Mathematics Lesson 2: Where Should We Meet?

This problem was presented as a sample math lesson in Chapter 4, and its details are not repeated here. Through investigation, students discover that the median is not only the 50th percentile but also the value that minimizes the total distance to all of the data points in a set. Instead of simply being told that it is often better to use the median when a data set is skewed (such "rules" are often overused and misused; sharing them should depend on the purpose as to which measure of center to use), students discover this attribute as they develop their skills in organizing and displaying data. Also, they continue to develop their number sense as they learn through experience that a measure of center is a value that summarizes a data set in a way that can solve real-world problems.
